Stacking 33 series switches & firmware

Greetings;

I was just wondering what the implications are of the following error showing up on a switching stack consisting of one (1) 3348 and one (1) 3324:

%BOX-E-STACK-SW-VERSIONS: Incompatible SW versions between MASTER and Unit 2

And sure enough, a show version returns the following:

Switch_IDF3# sh version

Unit
-------------
1
2

SW Version
--------------
1.2.0.6
1.1.0.42

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I believe that you should always make sure that all the units in your stack are running the same software version.  If you tried to stack units running different software versions the stacking function may not work properly.  For example, if there are some feature differences between the software version then when the master unit tries to provision these options across the stack it may not work correctly if at all.  It is always safest to make sure all units in the stack are at the same software load.

Cuong,

Thanks for your reply. That's what I expected.

Is it possible to safely copy the firmware from the master to the second unit? I ask this, because the switches are about 900 miles away from where I am.

Thanks.

Yes there is a method from the 33xx switches to download a software image from the master unit to the other stack units.  There is a detail method defined in the user guide which describe how you should upgrade a stack.

Here is the section in the guide concerning how to download software image to the stack units:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/pc33xx/en/ug/configha.htm#1134354

Also please review CLI spec for 33xx and other section in the User Guide for more information on the upgrade procedures.
