Switchport mode general vs switchport mode trunk
I am new to Dell Powerconnect switching equipment. Hoping some of you more experienced users can help me understand the best practice for using switchport mode general as opposed to using switchport mode trunk. I have used the access mode and trunk mode with other vendors, but do not recall a general mode.
From what I understand from the documentation, both the general and trunk mode support multiple tagged vlans on a single switch port. The difference is that the general mode can also support an untagged vlan.
Based on this, does this make sense with when/why to use the various switchport modes:
access mode = single untagged vlan typically used with a host
general mode = multiple tagged vlans, 1 untagged vlan, used with a host that supports sub-interfaces
trunk mode = multiple tagged vlans, used for vlan trunks (switch to switch trunk possibly 802.3ad trunks etc).
If I am off base please let me know as I am trying to understand how to best use the general mode.
Thanks,
David
