Turning off logging to the console?

If I want to turn off asynchronous logging of unimportant messages to the console so that my parser doesn't get confused, is "configure" followed by "logging console critical" one way of doing that? Or does this pertain to something else?

Also, is there a command to just log something at a given log level, so I can test where things are going?
