VLT and Stackmode can work at the same time?
Hi Guys,
I just wondering if this design will work.
We expanding our DC room and we have 4 units of switches which will act as a Core switches. Currently on the Room 1 we have 2 core switch which is on stacked. Now on new Room 2 we will place another 2 units for core switch. We are planning to do a stacking on CSW1-CSW2 and CSW3-CSW4. And thinking on using VLT rather than doing VRRP on CWS1-CSW3 and CSW2-CSW4.
Maybe you are confuse on the design above. Before we come up on this design the current design is only on Room 1 which is having the CSW1 and CSW2 on stacked but we experience few times that it hanged the whole stacked switches and now decided to have a redundancy pair of core switches.
Initial design was the stacked switched are form on the same room but because of the redundancy factor and we can't lay a cables from access switches going to another room. We decided to do the stacking in between of the room so it is less of the laying the cables, only the connection between the core switches. Now I'm thinking on doing VLT instead of VRRP on CSW1-CSW3 so both link is active.
I am not sure if VLT will work as the switches is already on stackmode.
I need your advice on this. Thank you.
Regards,
mich

Hi,
What model switches are you using? You may not even need to have them stacked and can just use VLT.

Hi Josh,
It's S4048-ON.
Yes it will be using 2 VLT domain and Proxy gateway right?. Thou my thoughts is what's the used of VLT in between of the 2 separate rooms (CSW3--CSW4) if the end device (access switches or servers) are not able to connect to both core switch due to different location and unable to lay so much cables from 1 room to another.
So I'm thinking of having 2 pair of stacked switches and use VLT in between thou I am not sure if this one will work at the same time.
Thanks.

Mich

CAUTION: Dell EMC Networking does not recommend enabling Stacking and VLT simultaneously. If you enable both features at the same time, unexpected behavior may occur.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for confirmation. Thou I am still confuse on how to configure between VRRP on the VLT switches. I mean VLT switch the VRRP to another set of switches.
The diagram below I already tested and working with VLT and VRRP, the S4048 is setup as VLT and VRRP for routing
But with the diagram below, I am a bit lost as I am not sure if the switches will be confused on which is the VRRP.
Help me to enlighten me. I this was proposed and I will do the implementation.
Thank for your support.
Regards,
Mich

They should all be looking for the VRRP master.
