1184 wireless router with cat 5????

just moved into house w/cat5 in all bedrooms and box in basement where they all come out....the same box as my cable stuff.  can i hook up my cable broadband modem in the basement then run the ethernet from the modem to the 1184 router......and then connect the 4 cat5 cables that run to my different rooms?   in other words...how can i set up my home network using my 1184 wireless router in my basement? does it have to be connected to a host computer or will it work directly from the modem?    i prefer to use the cat5 lines vice wireless.   thanks.

steve,  thanks.     how do i disable the wireless?    also, i tried what you said before i posted (except the 'power down' sequence part).   will try it while i wait for the answer to disabling wireless.  again, thanks much.

steve,

while you were telling me to reboot all computers after the other sequence......i tried the set-up and it didn't work.  however, i'll try it again and reboot the computers this time.   also,  could i be doing something wrong with the winxp network wizard (choosing the wrong option)?  this is a tad frustrating.  thanks for the help.

Make sure you reboot the computers after resetting the modem and router.  Documentation for the 1184 can be found at:

You should be able to connect the 1184 to the cable modem, connect the CAT5 cables to the LAN ports on the 1184, and everything should work.  Be sure to reset the cable modem by powering it down, powering it up and waiting a few minutes before powering on the router.  Also, if you want to avoid neighbors or drive-bys using your internet connection over the wireless network, you should either disable the wireless or set very high security settings.

You should not need to use the network wizard at all.  Just set the tcp/ip properties to obtain an IP address automically and it should all work.  These are default settings.  If you used the network wizard, you likely tried to install internet connection sharing which is not needed with a router.  If the wizard did install internet connection sharing, you need to disable it on the Advanced tab of the properties box for your Local Area Connection.

Whenever you change what the modem is connected to, you need to do the complete reset - Shut down everything.  Power up the modem.  Wait 5 minutes.  Power up the router, wait a minute.  Power on the computers.

When you reset everything go to Start > Run, type cmd then click OK.  In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all.  Copy and paste the output into a new message and we'll look at to see if we can find the problem.

steve, after all these tries...and a quick dinner in between...it's still not working.   :(   here's what i've got.

broadband cable modem working fine from basement on this computer with the cat5 line hooked to the back of the modem.   when i unplug the cat5 from the modem and plug it into one of the lan lines in the back of the 1184...then plug the modem into the 1184's 'internet' plug, it all goes out the window.  even after sequences of turning on and off each device.    i must be missing something.

when i unplug the cat5 from the back of the 1184 and plug it back into the modem itself....this computer (where i'm sitting now)  begins to work fine again.   ????

Your first post shows that you are not getting an IP address from the router.  (the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx) is the autoconfiguration address that Windows assigns when it can't connect to a dhcp server.  Are you sure the router is good?  When connected to the router, go to the command prompt window again and type ipconfig /release /renew.  If it is working you should get an IP address in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx.

And here is the ipconfig/all when I remove the router and simply plug into my Ethernet jack in my bedroom and plug that Ethernet into the back of the cable modem (in other words a direct connection).    On the router it has a ‘notice’ of don’t plug into lan if dchp……  I would assume that has nothing to do with my problem.   Any new ideas?

The first output shows that you are getting an IP address from the router.  Did you check the internet connection when configured this way?  It should have worked unless the router itself is not getting an IP address from the cable modem.   When connected to the router (again after resetting everything), first check that you are getting a good IP address from the router (it should be in the range 192.168.2.x).  If you are getting the such an address, then open Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.2.1 into the address bar.  This gets you into the web based configuration utility for your router (documentation for the router can be found at:

(Note that the default username and password are both admin).  Once in the configuration utility, click on Device Status and see if the router is getting a proper IP address from the cable modem.  It should be in the range 63.164.xxx.xxx.
