1515 Wireless-N Adapter Problems

Hello,

I just purchased a Dell Studio 13 XPS laptop from Best Buy last week.  I am extremely pleased with it with one exception.  The wireless drops out intermittently.  It will access a wireless network (ones at school with WPA2-enterprise Encryption, an open network at a coffee shop, and my home WPA2-personal encryption) and work well for a time and then suddenly it will drop the network and either a) refuse to even view it, or b) say that I have a low wireless signal.  After a while I will be able to connect again.

I have controlled for problems with the networks (I think) by using my wife’s hp laptop to access them during the down time.

I have installed all windows updates and even installed the latest wireless driver that Dell had on its website for my product.

It is very important that this issue is corrected.  If I am unable to correct this, I will have to take the computer back and exchange it for something that has stable wireless connectivity.  That is something I don’t want to do because it is otherwise a wonderful product.

I am running Windows Vista 64 home premium and the wireless adapter is called the 1515 Wireless-N adapter.

Anyone have any suggestions on this one?  I'm having the same problems.  I was able to get things to be a bit more reliable by updating my drivers and BIOS and by assigning a static IP as it seemed like DHCP wasn't working quite right.  I'd be more willing to chalk it up to being too far from the access point except that I'm about 10' away and my wife's HP works fine as does the MacBook Pro I have sitting right next to this machine.

And don't get me started about updating drivers... why on earth does Dell ship out a machine with literally all the drivers and the BIOS out of date?  ok, ok that's not really fair, the camera driver was still current.

BigBubba65,

I usually recommend that people use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in their wireless routers to make the connection work at its best.

You can also try this, I have found out this seems to help, too...

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Rick

WPA2 Security is great but not all wireless devices work with this type of security.

I have the same computer, same configuration, and the same problem. I still keep my old Vaio, and it works fine with the same Router. I have tried it in 4 different wireless webs with the same result. I get in touch with a technitian at dell, make some tests, he even get into my computer to see the problem. He told me the "G signal was the problem". Well I just came from the store with a brand new N Routher, and guess what? The same result. This adapter is not working. The computer is just 5 days old and I will return it for repair. I cannot belive it. This is the first adn last Dell I am buying.

There is another thread on this. The solution is to go to manufacturers site and get their latest driver and uninstall Dell driver. Link in other thread.

WORKS!

Thank you very much for this tip. With new driver it works perfect.

I wonder why Dell is installing outdated and not working staff.

thanks a lot

Can you point me in the right direction of the other thread?  I have looked for broadcom wireless drivers and am having no luck.  I have the 1510N adapter and keep seeing drops when connected to N.  My G connections are fine however.

I would like to try a newer driver as well.

Thanks

Suffering same. Often requires safe reboot

Just delete the Dell drivers from Device Manger.  (Click uninstall and make sure you check mark "Delete the drivers").  Then reinstall the Atheros drivers from the link above and you should be good to go.

hmm...the 1515 N must be based on the Atheros chipset?  I have the 1510 N and it is broadcom based.  I will try the broadcom drivers from the site in the link...hopefully they will solve my Wireless-N dropping problem.  I received 5 E6500's with the 1510 N card and the 2 that I tested both have no problems with G but drop intermittently with N.

I'll post back my results once I've had a chance to test.

Did anybody read the article about Vistas Broadcast Flag?

Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
