5100 inspiron network card problems

I recently had to send my inspiron5100 to dell to be refurbished due to a harddrive failure (mainly due to over heating problems with my heatsink)...dell also wanted to check for other problems and ended up replacing motherboard and replaced the heat sink parts to correct their faulty cooling system...$456 later i get my dell back...reinstall the OS and whatever else i could find to put back on it (of course the Money program that came on the computer when i bought it wasnt available so i could get my finances back together; dell sent me on a wild goose chase until finally i just bought 2006 to get started sooner than later...probably their plan all along during the run around)...i also bought a seagate external harddrive to help avoid data losses in the future...so now I'm out 456 + 219 + 45 bucks for 2006 money and dell had the balls to tell me i had to pay another $99 for 3 days of tech support to answer my questions about my network problems...so i told them to stick it up their backsides...well to shorten the story and get to my questions i am unable to connect to the internet via my dsl (cebridge.net) which works as i'm using another computer on the home network to type this...i use a router and ethernet cord to connect the computers together...

How can I tell if my network card is bad and is there any other options it could be that is keeping me from connecting to the internet...(my 2006 money program wont work because its wanting the computer to connect to the internet to look for updates...)

Thanks in advance for any help you can throw me...

After reinstalling Windows did you first install the chipset drivers (before installing any other drivers) and then install the drivers for the the network adapter?

There were no yellow !!!...I did load the drivers but it did not help...is it a major problem that i did not install in the right order (chipset after Windows XP OS)? Other ideas for me to try? My son called the ISP and they tried recognizing the router and modem and i think they felt like it was the network card, but most of those guys are just following a script I think so it might be above their relm of options...

Any other suggestions?

Marty

Steve,
I had already installed the chip drivers last night...so i just went to the device manager and clicked uninstall on the 1394 Net adapter...stuck on hour glass right now...will uninstall the broadcom 440 next...should i have had the 1394 installed in the first place? i notice the network driver you made available was the broadcom 440...

thanks again,

Try loading the chipset drivers, then after the chipset drivers are loaded, going into Device Manager and removing the nework adapter.  Then reboot and try installing the network drivers.

The 1394 adapter is your firewire port.  There was no need to remove that, but Windows should be able to reload it if the chipset drivers are installed.  The Broadcom 440 is the integrated etherenet network adapter (it is part of the motherboard).  That is the one you should remove in Device Manager and then reboot and run the file to install the drivers.

Steve,

for some reason the computer wouldnt uninstall the 1394 adapter, but did the broadcom 440...i have reinstalled the broadcom 440...an alert came up saying the local area connection 2 --- A network cable is unplugged.

I'm not sure what that is...i will have to wait to see if i can connect now until i take laptop home later tonight (at work now)...i will inform the results...

thanks for your ongong help!!

The "Network cable unplugged" message is a good sign at this point.  It tells you that the network adapter is now recognized, but there is nothing plugged into it.

Open Intenet Explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab.  Click on the LAN Settings button and make sure there are no check marks on the page.   If that doesn't solve the problem, as a further troubleshooting step, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

ok..here goes...there was a check in the automatically check proxy settings....i removed it...restarted windows and tried Explorer again...it changed the lower left from detecting proxy settings to finding site: www.yahoo.com....but just kept looking and never hit...so i did the run cmd thing and when the command prompt window came up it had ---> c:\ Documents and Settings\John Little> and i typed in ipconfig/all and all it did was put a curser on the next line...nothing else happened...

I must of really hosed things up when i installed everything...
