56k v.90 fax modem and netwaiting
I have a dimension 4600, it came with a 56k PCI Data Fax Modem. Net Waiting says I have no (V.92 server), and another says (on hold resource). I have the net waiting program on the computer, but it is not working with the V.90 Modem. I have call waiting on my phone. Do I need to up grade to a V.92 Modem to get this program working? Will I need to get a Dell service person to replace the Modem, or can I do it myself. My computer is just two weeks old. Will I have to replace my V.90 Modem with a Dell modem, or will another one work?

Thank you for replying although I don't understand; You say I have a V.92 modem why I am getting this reading that says I have a conexant D850 56K V.9X DGVc Modem. Is that a V.92?
You were saying it could be my ISP.
On my last computer; I had a Robotics 56K V.92 Fax modem with call waiting features. My ISP had no problem with the service. Will the same modem work on my deminsion 4600 Dell pc.

I assmume that would be a Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc modem.
Conexant is the chipset manufacturer, D850 chipset(?)
56K = Maximum data rate
V.9x = must be shortcut for v.90/v.92. Most manufacturers just say v.92
DFVc = Data, Fax, Voice.
V.90 = ITU recommendation that allows connection data rates of up to 56K download, and 33.6K upload.
V.92 - ITU recommendation that allows connection data rates of up to 56K downloads and 48K uploads.
V.92 also added a few frills such as fast connect and Modem on Hold (Call waiting).
V.92 capable modems must be used on both ends for MOH to be available. The ITU spec does not require a v.92 connect to actually be obtained for MOH, but some modem manufacturers have implimented it that way.
If you are calling a number where you connect with host equipment that does not support v.92, or if your ISP has MOH turned off, you will not have that service available. But it sounds like you are calling the same number that was previously working for you.
If that is the case, about the only thing I could suggest would be to check for a driver update. I'm not a software person, but there are a couple others on this board that are quite knowledgable on modem drivers. Hopefully one of them will speak up.

Yes, most likely the USR modem would work in your 4600, as long as it is installed with the proper drives.

Than you again for your advice. I am going to talk with my ISP today, and also I have been getting notices to do upgrading.
Thanks a bunch!
