600M and 1370 wireless freezes computer

Question

I've got a 600m with a 1370 and I'm a problem where the system freezes and something is putting the hard drive into continuous activity when teh laptop is within range of a wireless router. I've tried seeing what is running that is taking up so much resource, but I've not seen anything in the task list. I've installed the most recent driver for the wireless card, but that did not fix anything. The only way that I can get the computer to respond is to disable the wireless entirely. Running XP SP2.

Are you running Antivirus software with up to date virus defintitions? Have you checked your system for spyware and other malware that may have been downloaded and installed on your computer? Instead of looking at the task list in Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and use the view settings to show columns for CPU Usage and CPU time and see if you can identify the process that using the CPU and generating hard drive activity. Your problem sounds like a serious trojan virus or spyware.

This is being used by my stepdaughter, so this is what I know. She doesn't use wireless at school so she has never seen this problem before she came home for holidays. One thing she did before coming home was to change the AV software from McAfee (supplied by Dell) to Symantec (supplied and supported by Barnard), but she was not sure if she correctly did the uninstall/install process. I don't think she had any anti-spyware except what McAfee does (and I'm not sure what McAfee has). I loaded up Spybot Search and Destroy on her laptop and it did not find anything, though it did flag something in McAfee (can't remember what).

I'll check the processes tab when she gets back on Wednesday. Thanks.
