8400 network problem

Question

Just got new 8400, still have my trusty 4400, but when I set the new one up I can no longer share files with the laptop, did i foget something? Hooked the 4400 back up and it worked fine. What am I missing? Or is SP2 screwing something up?

Did you configure the Windows XP SP2 firewall to allow local network traffic? If you are running any third party firewall's, also make sure these are configured to allow local network traffic.

If this is not the problem, please provide more details. Does the file sharing work one way but not the other? If so, which computer is having the problem? Is file and printer sharing enabled on both computers? Have drives or folders been designated as shared resources? Can you access the shared documents folder on each computer from the other?

Filesharing does work either way. I can't view any workgroup computers on the desktop. the laptop tries to access desktop but says network path not found. file and printer sharing are enabled on both computers. The new 8400 is the problem. It is not recognizing the laptop for some reason.

Do you really mean 'file sharing doesn't work either way'? (I suspect so, or you wouldn't have the problem.  Is the 8400 getting an IP address from the router?  The IP address should be in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx.  Are the link lights on the router and next to the network cable on the 8400 lit up?  In Device Manager are there any problem devices shown?  Did you recently reinstall Windows XP on the 8400?  Have you configured any firewalls that you might have running to allow local network traffic? Steve

Steve,Went through all items you mentuioned, the router has light on under local network, IP address is ok, all lights on router and network cable lit, no problems in device manager, box was delivered with XP Home SP2 already installed,only firewall is Microsofts.

With the XP2 firewall enabled, make sure that it is set to allow file and printer sharing. Got to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall, then click on the Exceptions tab and check the box next to File and Printer Sharing.

Are you getting an IP address on the 8400? What is it connected to (hub/switch/router/directly through a cross-over cable)? Have you uninstalled or installed any software (uninstallation of Norton Antivirus can break the network, for example)? Does this computer connect to the internet? If so, how? Have you had it long enought to accumulate any spyware? Have you run spyware removal programs? We now have to get into every detail that might be important.

Yes getting IP address,connected to d-link router, this is a brand new computer, hooked the old back up and it networked fine, so it has to be something thats configured wrong in the new 8400. the laptop recognizes the desktop but not the other way around. The laptop will say network path not found when trying to access the desktop. I read another post from that had the same problem with a new machine but was not resolved. I appreciate your help.

Try reinstalling the network adapter drivers. Download them from

Choose the drivers that correspond to the version of the controller you have. If you don't have either one of these devices, post back.

Is the network adapter the gigabit adapter?  I've seen several other users post with problems with that adapter.  A relativley inexpensive troubleshooting step would be to install a cheap (<$15) PCI network adapter.  If that works, then it would suggest that there is a problem with the integrated adapter. I am having the same problem with my new 8400. My problem is in the firewalls - specifically the Norton Firewall. It seems to screw up things for everybody on the local network. I have Zone alarm on my other two systems. I had some success by turning Norton off and then reconfiguring Zone Alarm on my other two computers.

Go to the Norton Firewall section and then the networking tab. Try to follow the instructions to configure computers into your trusted zone. The problem I am facing now is I get a status of NETWORK DETECTOR IS OFF (this does auto detection of the computers on your net) and I cant find out how to turn it on.

OR

Turn the Norton firewall off. My system seems to work when I do that.
