9300 intel2200 configure???

Hi how do I set up my 9300's wireless to work in a coffee shop hotel or airport that offers wireless service. I want to be able to do this on batteries. The one time I tried the system disabled the wireless because I was on batteries. I changed that once I got home and plugged it in what else do I need to do to be ready to go At the moment it says it is not connected. My old computer just had a card when I wanted it on I just popped in the card and it hooked up when I wanted it off to save battery or whatever I just took out the card
