Actiontec seizes line, won't dial
I have an 8100 with the Actiontec (MP100im I think) internal modem.
1. The Dell Diagnostics CD DOS-based modem test says the modem passes all tests.
2. The Dell Diagnostics XP software diagnostics can't find the modem on COM 3.
3. Using hyperterminal and ATZ, ATX1, ATDTxxxxxxx will take the phone line off-hook. I hear DTMF dialing over the computer speakers but only the dial tone on the phone line: there is no DTMF on the POTS line when monitoring via buttset. On-hook voltage is 50 VDC at the modem PC board terminal.
4. This is a regular SBC POTS line. Works fine for fax and voice.
5. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Lucent Win Modem drivers. No change.
6. I tried changing to COM4. Same results.

The FAQ says I may have a bad modem if I don't hear it dialing on the POTS line but since the modem does take the POTS line off-hook I wondered if there is something else at play. Thanks for all suggestions.

It has been a while but try the ATDWTXXXXX or is it ATDTWXXXXXX The W means wait for dialtone and not blindly dial.
If sounds like you are dumping digits before dialtone is detected or received.
