Add New Computer to Network as Hose?

Question

I'm trying to add my new Dimension 9200 computer (call it Z) to my peer-to-peer Windows ethernet network. I presently have two computers (call them X and Y) on the network. All three computers are connected to a D-Link DI-624 router on its LAN side. The router's WAN connects to a DSL modem.   All three computers connect just fine to the internet.   With firewalls on OR off, I get the following behaviors:   Computer Z (the new computer) can 'see' X and Y by pinging their IP addresses or their computer names.   Computer Y can 'see' X and Z by pinging their IP addresses. Computer Y can see X by pinging its computer name. However, Computer Y cannot see the new computer (Computer Z) by pinging its name. I get the following error message: 'Ping request could not find host Z. Please check the name and try again.'   Similarly, Computer X can 'see' Y and Z by pinging their IP addresses. Computer X can 'see' Y by pinging its computer name. However, Computer X cannot see the new computer (Computer Z) by pinging its name. I get the following error message: 'Ping request could not find host Z. Please check the name and try again.'   The only difference I can find between the three computers is that ZoneAlarm identifies the network address Entry Type on the new computer (Computer Z) as an 'Adapter Subnet'. On the other two computers (X and Y), ZoneAlarm identifies the network address Entry Type as a 'Network'. Simple file sharing is off on all three computers. Windows File and Printer sharing is enabled on all three computers.   How can I share and access files on Z from X and Y? Hope this is all clear.   Max

This is why I quit using zone alarm and went back to the old Sygate 5.6 Some times Zonealarm works great but sometimes it does not, quit using it when it trashed my tcpip stack. And turning it off does not alleviate the problem either, you have to uninstall it. You might try uninstalling Zone on Z, and reinstall it while connected to the network.

Put Computers X & Y inside the 'Trusted Zone' for computer Z.   Since you are behind a router, ZA is an overkill.

i too had problems with zone alarm and my network even when trusting ip addys.. so went to outpost and all is fine...

BTW jmwills, it might be overkill, and probably the case for me too... but i use it more for software blocking more than anything...

Thanks to all of you who replied. Poor ZoneAlarm. Everybody blames it. (...smile); I've used it in my home network for years and never had a problem I couldn't resolve. However, I did uninstall it on all three computers. Turned off Windows firewall (which the uninstall turns on). No difference.

Anyway, I'm becoming convinced this is a hardware problem. For some reason, the network adapter on the new computer wants to be a subnet adapter, rather than part of the network. I can't find any setting that will change it. I'm decommissioning one of the computers to donate to my church. When I finish wiping the hard drive, I'm going to grab the ethernet adapter out of it, install in the new computer, disable the new computer's current adapter, and see what happens.

Thought I would report back. In the end, I had to do a clean reinstall of WinXP. At this point, my network now seems okay.

I understand what sub-networks are but you said subset adapter.  Thank God for IPv6 and we can get rid of these routers.
