Add Windows XP to Windows 2000 Home Network
Hope there's an answer out there. I've searched existing this forum, checked out practicallynetworked.com, and homenethelp.com. Still, I haven't found a solution for what ails me and my network.
Here's my setup:
- (1) Desktop running Windows 2000
- (1) Laptop running Windows 2000
- (1) Linksys router connected to a DSL modem.
Here's the addition:
- (1) Dell Inspiron 700m laptop running Windows XP Home. The laptop is connected wirelessly to the network and to the internet.
The Windows 2000 setup/workgroup runs fine, can share folders and printers and can access the internet. All computers can access the internet. The 2000 computers can "see" the XP. The XP can't "see" the 2000s. Only the 2000s can "talk" to each other.
Any ideas how I can get this workgroup going? The ICS has been turned off completely. The workgroup/domain is the same for each of the computers and the names are unique. Thanks in advance for the ideas!

Having the same account name and password helps. You can go into run box and type control userpasswords2 and change the default Administrator password. Not sure if safe mode is the only way for you to do this in XP Home. 2000 doesn't have simple filesharing like XP Home. I've only done Pro with 2000 and always have all my profiles and passwords the same (easier to remember). I did get a password box the first time and used the Administrator password and was in. After that never had to enter anything. XP likes to use netbios over tcp/ip. I don't think I ever had to mess with 2000 services. Make sure DHCP Client,DNS, Computer browser any other network service are all on automatic and started in Services
