after few days not using Internet I lose connection

Hi,

This has happened to me before already couple of time. When I do not use Internet for couple of days I lose my connection. Last time I believe I regained the connection after running Network Setup Wizard. This time it would not work. When I have the router, modem connected via wireless only the wizard would tell that not all necessary components are connected. However when I add fixed cable from the router to the PC the message would disappear.

I am using Inspiron 8600; TrueMobile 2300; Motorola cable modem.

When using wireless internet connection – the wireless icon says Excellent Connection.

When using fixed cable connection the – the connection icon says 100 mbps.

Checked Device Manager – did not find any yellow / red warning marks.

Tested Broadcom Advanced Control Suite (Broadcom 440 x 10/100 Integrated Controller) – On Chip CPU – failed the test – unsupported test for BCM 440 X.
Network Test – can not retrieve link status.

Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks,
John

What kind of internet connection do you have. It sounds like you have a PPPOE connection via DSL. If that's the case I would check the router settings to make sure that it keeps the connection alive. I believe you can also modify this setting in minutes, I have my modem set to 0 so it keeps the connection alive continously.

I am using cable.

I do not even get Internet when directly connected to the modem. The icon shows the connection. When doing ipconfig, the gateway shows up blank. I do not know the gateway number to fill in, so the static ip, gateway does not work either. How do I find out the gateway #? Could I use a different computer? Any other ways? When I get the Internet working with the static setting, how do I configure it to work with Obtain automatically settings?

Thanks, John

You may want to contact your Cable company, may be a problem with the cable modem. That's where I would start.
