Bought used Latitude; wireless not working

Hi,

The company I work for raffled off some Latitude laptops for charity.  I won one of them.  The IT people told me that when they get a new computer for the company, they wipe the hard drive clean, then re-install Windows XP Professional and they also install login capability.

I've been able to go in and create a new account for it, so I'm now able to use it.  However, the wireless does not seem to work.  The switch on the left side for wireless is on.  But when I right-click on the wireless icon and then select View Wireless Connections it says

Windows cannot configure this wireless connection - If you want Windows to configure it, start the Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service

I have no idea what this means.  Can someone help me with this please?

Deaf Guy,

Not sure what the Active Client Agent is. You might try making a system restore point, that way if things don't work correctly, you can come back to what you have.

Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type

msconfig

Hit enter, click on startup. You might be able to disable the Active Client Agent from starting there. Remember what you uncheck there. If things don't work, go back and check the boxes.

Worst case, use system restore and it will go back to what you currently have.

Yes there is either a switch to turn on the wireless on the left hand side of the laptop or if there is not a switch there is a keystroke combo that will turn the wireless back on after a system restore. I apologize that I do not have it off the top of my head! Gl

Many Dells that come with the INTEL PRO SET software and Driver must use the INTEL utility to setup a profile to

attach to a wireless network.

You didnt say which model dell or what model wireless card.

You can unistall all of the software except the driver but I don't recommend that.

Depending on whether you have the Intel or the Dell (Broadcom) wifi card, you need to un-install the related utility program that was installed for the wifi card.

Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

Be sure to just uninstall the program and not the driver.

Sir, I do have one more question.  I have what's called an Active Client Agent in that services section.  I don't need it and never use it.  If I go into services and disable and stop that, will it not load as well?  Will it mess up my computer?

Also, is that services thing similar to the registry - telling the computer what to run and not run, disabling things, and so on?  That services area is something totally new to me that I never knew about.

Again, thanks for all of your help.
