Broadcom 440x in my 8600 not working
I am trying to set up Earthlink cable internet service in my 8600. Windows XP reconizes that I pluged in the ethernet connection, but the Earthlink software cannot detect a connection; saying that a network connection must be setup. However the software does list the Broadcom 440X as a option but says that the connection failed. The broadcom Lan/hi speed internet does appear in my network places.
I went to My Network places and clicked to "repair" the Broadcom connection but got an error saying failure occurred while renewing the ip address.
I turned off all firewalls and virus protection while trying the setup. I know that it is not the modem or service as I am using it now on my desktop.
any ideas?

kd5loe,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Try to ping the loopback address. This is software so it should work, at a DOS prompt type:
ping 127.0.0.1
Next, you should ensure the network adapter is receiving an IP address, type:
ipconfig /all
This should return with values in the IP address. If the result is 169. anything, then the card has a Microsoft IP and needs to be released. Normally, the easiest way of accomplishing this is to reset the computer. I welcome other users to add their input on this topic.

Thanks for the reply. I tried loading the USB drivers for the modem and tried connecting the broadband that way. The computer stated that the adapter and modem was reconized, and the modem showed I was connected but that was it. The earthlink software listed both the ethernet and usb connections as options to connect from, but stated that hardware or a network connection needed to be installed.
So I cannot connect to my broadband by either USB or ethernet. I even tried connecting manually around the earthlink software but no go. Are there some settings somewhere that I am missing??? XP stated that the ethernet and USB connections were working properly, but all the software on the computer just can't connect with them.
I am at work now (graveyard shift...yeah I know...) and using dialup so at least that works on this machine. At least we can rule out a total inernet failure.
