Broadcom BCM V.92 56K Modem

I have a Dimension 2400 Desktop that came with a Broadcom BCM V.92 56K Modem. Where I live out in the country I only have access to dial-up and of course it is REALLY SLOW.  Usually I am lucky to get 26.4 Kbps when I connect. Is it worth it for me to buy a newer modem to possibly give me faster connections and internet speed?

First off you should never post your email on this board and suggest you edit this message and remove it.
I also live in the country and most likely your slow speed is from old phone lines in your area and being too far away from a sub-station. So I doubt you can get any faster speed. You can test the modem and see if the speed is great by trying it at a friends house in the city. But I believe you will be wasting your money.

That's what I was afraid of. Oh well, thanks anyway.

Modems are cheap these days.

If you want to, it may be worth it to buy another modem, but not just any modem.

Look for the 3Com 56K Courier V.Everything external modem on eBay.

In it's day, it was the Cadillac of modems.

OK, they are cheap enough to try out - hopefully it may overcome some of the problems with old, static phone lines, etc... do you agree?

If this doesn't work as I'm not too keen on adding more external devices on my computer due to lack of space, are there any Internal Modems you would recommend?

Doubt your response was meant to me but if any modem will help at all it would be the one the other poster mentioned. You might go from 26.4 to 28.8 which isn't much help. I have never been able to overcome the old phone line issues really. No modem can make them better lines. Usually a 3com will make the connection more stable and less disconnects. One can run a line directly from the outside box to the phone jack where you plug the modem in and that helps a little. But yes, modems are cheaper now but the one mentioned may be a bit higher. Get a hardware base modem instead of the software modems like winmodems. Good luck!

Sorry. Can't help with internal modems. If you go to Amazon.com, and look up this modem, one of the reviews is for a guy who lives out in the country and claims that the modem helped him a lot. review

There are a couple of these modems both new and used on eBay.

Good luck!
