cable connection drops by half when wireless
I have Inspiron 600m with Intel 2100 wireless card and netgear b wireless router. This computer is the only 1 I have, so no network. When I am physically connected to the router the cable connection and download speed are normal. When I go wireless it drops by half. Moreover, when i use only battey and wireless there is barely any connection.
Any idea to what is going on?

The speed of a wireless network far exceeds normal cable or ADSL speed. If the speed is dropping, you may have very low signal strength or you may be getting interference . You might try changing the channel of the wireless router to see if you get better results.

Also what operating system are you using? How about the specifications about your computer?

Have you tried changing channels? It is possible you are near another AP using the same channel or some other device in your area may be using the same frequency.
Other than that, I've no idea what might be happening.

Are you upto date with all updates from microsoft. That helps as well. How abt latest drivers for your wireless card and router?

ok, so the strenght of the signal is excellent; I'll be sitting next to the router and it still drops speed. I don't know if there is any intereference. I am running Inspiron 600m SXGA+; 1.7 Ghz Centrino processor; 64 MB Video card; 256 MB Memory and 30GB hard drive; DVD +CD RW Drive; ; Netgear router (don't remember the model number, but it only supports b data transfer) Router; Intel2100 Card.

I know it does, but I use the same access point at home and at work, same ADSL provider. At work, the connection uses WEP. At home, I have left the system open. I can't tell any difference in the speed of the systems. I know there is a delay associated with encryption/decryption, but it is not apparent in normal use.

well, I installed the new intel 2100 card firmware as well as the latests firmware for the router. I also changed the channels, but still the problem persists. Also why does the connection drop even more (almost to the level of 56k modem) when Inspiron runs only on battery. I'll try calling the Netgear

This sure is strange. I have not experienced it. And Technical Support could not help you either? Ask them to transfer you Advanced Technical Support.

You know I would recommend having router and card from the same company to avoid such incompatability issues. I have both from Dell and go not notice these differences.

Maybe I should get True Mobile 1300 and True Mobile 2300 router.

I would recommend that since I know that worked for me and I did not face any of these issues. Good luck!
