Can not connect to the internet
This Message was previously posted in Desktops, general hardware and it was suggested that I post it here.
I have a Dell Dimension 5100. Windows XP Pro SP2 About 3 years old. It has an Intel Pro 10/100 integrated network card. I kept losing my connection and felt the problem was with my cable modem. They came out and found the modem was ok. They said I needed to replace the network card. I bought a Linksys 10/100 Card. I went into the BIOS and disabled the Intel. Installed the new card and its driver. BUT still can not connect.
The cable modem is ok since I am doing this conversation with my laptop connected to the modem.
Since I can not connect to the internet I do not see how Dell could check the system using their support out of warranty too.
What else could be wrong.

Whenever you change the device (computer) connected to a cable modem, it is absolutley essential that you do a complete reset of the network. Cable modems remember the last device they connnected to and will never connect to a different device until the reset procedure is done. To reset the modem, turn everything off. Wait 5 minutes. Turn on the cable modem. Wait a few more minutes, then turn on the device that is directly connected to the modem.

I have been aware that it is necessary to reconnect the modem when a new computer is attached but usually await of a shorter duration. I did follow though your recommendations without any success. A technician from the cable company did come today and after talking with his office - technical support - they did a "modem push thru" and that seemed get the internet connection. Only trouble, it only lasted that one connection. I called but the technician on phone was going to try and get the one that came to come back. That was about 5 hours ago.
Your comments from a couple of years ago on a similar subject were helpful.

Thanks for your help. My problem has been solved. I believe that an issue existed between my internet security and a windows conflict. For some time with Norton Internet Security I would get a message that an unexpected problem had been encountered. I would go several days and the same problem would pop up. My subscription was running out and I decided to try another. This time ZoneAlarm. Problems appeared worse but if turned AZ off I was able to access internet. That of course left me vulnerable. Their web site made reference to KB951748 - to download. I did but I found SP3 for Windows XP. I have had no problems since installing SP3.
