Can only link to SECURE websites on RCN Cable modem
Hi-
(Apologies if the answer is already out there somwhere - I can't find it)
I am running IE Ver 6 on a Dell Latitude 510, Windows XP. I am connecting directly through the modem, not through a wireless. This problem also started on the other computer in the house at the same time (via wireless).
My ISP (RCN) just swapped out a cable modem with telephone connection (sorry, don't know brand) for a regular cable modem for service with cable tv & internet (Toshiba PCX2500).
As soon as they did this, I can now only link to SECURE websites (such as web-based email, banks, etc). I cannot link to any (and I have tried A LOT) NORMAL websites, such as Google, Yahoo, NY Times, etc.
The cable company had me go through a number of procedures (clearing cookies/cache/etc, other twaeking of IE settings, turning off/on computer/modem, click "repair" on my LAN). I can PING regular websites, but cannot view with IE. They have decided that this must be a problem with my computer and told me to call Microsoft for help. They have refused to help fix this problem unless I pay them.
It seems to take a LONG TIME for IE to tell me the web page "cannot be viewed", almost as though something is timing out.
If you can help, I'd much appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Quite the opposite - my RCN tech gave me his personal cell phone #, as he said the people answering the phones were often of little help. He is bringing out a replacement modem - I wanted to get the same model as I had before, but apparently they will only allow this to be put on the network if I order phone service. If the new modem doesn't do the trick, I'll try to get past the phone answerers.
The REAL test should be that they bring their own computer out to my house and prove they can connect - then I will be left with egg on my face to snack on while I try to find the problem on my own (without an internet connection).
I will try loading firefox at lunch today and see if that works - good suggestion, although my hopes are low.

Yes, it does seem pretty clear cut where the problem lies. Have you tried getting the issue taken up by a higher level of tech support at RCN?

This is exactly the opposite of the problem that is usually reported (i.e. the common problem is that one cannot connect to secure web sites). Have you tried a different web browser (like Firefox, for example) just to see if the problem is with Internet Explorer? Have you set the security settings in Internet Explorer back to their default levels?
