Cannot access desktop on wireless network

I just set up a wireless network, well kind of. My desktop is connected to a Linksys router. The router is connected to my Alltel DSL modem. My wife has an HP/Compaq Laptop. Both computers connect fine with the internet. I used the Windows wizard to set up the network, and I did so first with the laptop. I can access the shared files on the laptop from the desktop, but I cannot access the desktop computer from the laptop. The laptop keeps telling me that I have no authority to access the desktop computer at all. I want to be able to access my files and folders on the desktop from the wireless laptop. I have also, as I read elsewhere on this forum, disabled windows firewalls on both machines and disabled my Norton Internet Security 2005 Firewall as well, but still I can't get at the desktop from the laptop. What have I done wrong and how can I correct it? Should I get rid of the network and shared files that I set up with the Wizard (and how do I do that by the way) and start over? I followed just about everything that I found in "Tom"s Networking" article that I found here, but still no luck.

I know this is a rather long posting, and I apologize, but I hope someone can help me.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Hi Bob

I have exactly the same problem after networking my computers.  Did you happen to get it working?  If so, what do I have to do to get mine working?

If anyone else out there knows a solution it would be greatly appreciated.  It has given me a major headache.

Paul

did you enable file sharing on my documents on the hardrive and on my documents on the laptop? Also, what file are you trying to reach?

I have a desktop and new laptop networked.  I can surf the web on both.  I can access shared files on the laptop from the desktop but can't access shared files on the desktop from the laptop.

I get an error message \\Office is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied.

Please note that by design, Windows will not allow you to share any folder or file under the Documents and Settings folder, except the Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents folder (which also has the name Shared Documents).  Similary, by design, Windows will not allow you share any folder under the Windows folder or the Program Files folder.   Microsoft did this to eliminate a security risk.   Thus, if you want to share any file in folders under Documents and Settings\"Your Username", you must either create a folder outside of this folder into which you place the files you want to share or place these files in folders under the All Users folder.

See the following Microsoft article on this issue:

See the statement about 1/2 way down the page:

"Note  The Sharing option is not available for the Documents and Settings, Program Files, and Windows system folders. In addition, you cannot share folders in other users’ profiles".

I have enabled file sharing in My Documents on the desktop and I still can't access the files.

On the laptop I only have the SharedDocs on Laptop in My Network Places.  When I view workgroup computers I see the Laptop and Desktop but when I try to go into Desktop I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied.

On the desktop I can access shared folders on the laptop.

Thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it.  I just hope I can sort this problem out.

If you can't access the Shared Documents folder or other folders besides those mentioned above, which again, cannot be shared, then the most common cause for this problem is an improperly configured firewall on the computer whose files you cannot access.  On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic.  Note that current Dell products ship with either the Norton programs or the McAfee programs, both of which contain firewalls.  If there is any doubt about the possiblity of one of these programs suites causing the problem, uninstall the programs as a troubleshooting step.  Once you determine that it is one of these program suites causing the problem, then you can reinstall after carefully reading the user manual on how to set up the firewall to allow local network traffic.
