'Cannot communicate with primary DNS service(192.168.1.254)
So just last night after about 3 years my laptop won't go on the internet and states this message when i try and do the windows repair.
It says its connected local only with only 2 signal bars. It says its connected to the home hub (BT) but then wont go that bit further and connect to the actual internet.
I have changed the wireless channel to 11 and it has made no difference at all. I have also tried to connect with a ethinic cable and the only difference it makes is it changed the signal to excellent but still wont connect to the internet!
This is defineteley a problem with the laptop as we have two other laptops and an ipad connected to the home hub which are all working fine. Also i have got BT to check the connection and its all ok.
Strange that after 3 years this is suddenly happening!
Any ideas would be much appreciated!! (Insprion 1525)

becky20889,
Did you try using system restore to a day before this happened?
Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.
What virus program and firewall are you using?

becky20889,
From helping others, I have found out that McAfee is the problem. Use system restore and go back a day or two and you should be able to connect.

Rick,
I'm hoping you can help me too! I have the same problem starting yesterday, I have McAfee running and did a load of Windows updates a couple of days ago. Starting yesterday I can't connect to the net.
I ran IE diagnostics and it looks like it might be some sort of DNS issue - unable to resolve www.microsoft.com.
I followed your instructions but System Restore has been turned off! Not sure why, all my other devices have it enabled. :-(
So is it an option to rescind updates manually? If so would I be best to remove all the Windows updates I put on a couple of days ago? And / or, you mention McAfee - how / should I remove any McAfee system updates over the last couple of days? Or should I just disable McAfee then maybe delete / reinstall??
Many thanks in advance for any help,
SAH265

SAH265,
Try reading...
http://mcaf.ee/s3b79
You can try McAfee's solution or just use system restore and go back before Saturday night. If you don't have a system restore point, then you can use the McAfee Removal Tool to uninstall McAfee, then restart your computer. You'll be able to get back online. Then follow the instructions to reinstall McAfee.

Thanks Rick. Following your original McAfee tip I seem to have gotten round the problem a slightly different way, didn't need to remove / reinstall McAfee, so here goes for anyone that's interested... No warranty given of course but it seems to have worked for me!
1. Stopped all McAfee services - I was unable to stop a couple of them due to Access Denied but it didn't seem to make a difference in the long run...
2. Downloaded McAfee Stinger:
www.mcafee.com/.../stinger.aspx
www.mcafee.com/.../how-to-use-stinger.aspx
3. Ran Stinger in default mode - Sensitivity=Medium, On Virus Detection=Repair.
(There are further Sensitivity levels, High and Very High; McAfee recommends running these with On Virus Detection="Report Only" initially. I did not have to go this far)
4. After Stinger ran to completion I rebooted straight away which restarted all McAfee services.
Eureka - Internet working again!
NB. I've checked the link that Rick sent - http://mcaf.ee/s3b79 - and it suggests that you should ensure McAfee DAT level is 6809 after reinstall. Mine is still 6807, and Live Update doesn't seem to work that well but this is not a new problem for me, hopefully it will update to 6809 automatically in the near future. But as I say, my internet access has returned.
Oh and by the way I've made sure system restore is now switched back on :-)
Regards,
sah265

Hi Rick, im 99% sure it isnt McAfee though as it was still the same when McAfee was completely uninstalled from my laptop?
