Cannot Connect to Internet - Inspiron 6000 w/XP

1394 is not wireless unless you are connected to the firewire port...it is in fact the IEEE connection.

If that is all that is in the network connections then you do not have a working wireless adapter.

I have an intel 2200bg adapter in my 6000..look in device manager and see if there are adapters showing up in there.

What can I do to connect to the firewall or what should I buy to get wireless?  This is all new to me!!!!!

that's right, the 1394 adapter is for firewire use and has nothing to do with the wireless connection at all.

Check if your system came with a wireless card/adapter. Check your invoice or something or go to support.dell.com>warranty information, enter your service tag and check it in the ORIG CONFIGURATION tab. if the system was ordered with a wlan card and it's not showing up in the device manager, check it in the BIOS, or call tech support.

Supposedly have Intel 2200 b/g wireless card.  I found the Intel driver on Dell support, but how can I download on my desktop and transfer to the Inspiron (no internet access) for installation?  I also need to install Notebook system (where to I find this) and all other drivers, since XP Operating System was reinstalled.  How do I know which driver to select for the various installations.....audio, video, communication, input, misc., etc.

Since you cannot connect with the laptop a usb thumb drive is your best option download the driver(s) and use the thumb drive to load  them  into your laptop..

Ok since you say you reinstall XP lets see where the system stands.

First what did you use for a reinstalltion disk? Was it the dell restore disk?

We proably have very simular laptops so i might be able to help you get all the correct drivers.

You dont by chance have another Dell disk labled drivers and support or somthing like that do you?

Oh boy, here goes.  I bought the laptop off Ebay.  The guy tried to help me at first but now won't return my calls.  He had reinstalled XP (don't know how).  When he couldn't guide me over the phone to install the drivers he had me do a recovery back to April 27th, and that didn't help.  Now he won't return my calls.

He sent me the following disks:

What will a USB thumb drive cost me.  I'm already out quite a bit of money for something that isn't working.

You asked about age, I think it is two years old--he said he had it for a year.

Ok appears out system were proably built around the same time so should have very simular hardware..

so do this

Right click on the My computer icon and open device manage. Look in Device manager for any devices that have either a yellow ? or a red X on them and report back

As to a tumb drive they are very inexpensive and you can pick them up almost anywhere..prices will be anyware from around $5 to 50 for a larger one.. i would say a 1 gig you should be able to get for between 5-10

The only other way untill we get the laptop connected would be to burn a Cd.

Thanks so much for assist.  I can burn CDs or I can purchase the drive--what do you suggest?  If you think the drive, would Radio Shack have it, or do I need to go to Best Buy?

if you are comfortable making a data cd than that will be fine to..all you realy need is a way to get the files copied onto the laptop from a computer that you can access the net with..

OK the reason you cannot connect is because you have no ethernet or network adapters.. let me look and i will post further instructions...

OK.  I've installed that download and it shows in Network Adapters.
