Forget it.  Hours of frustration.  It's going to be target practice on the range tomorrow morning.  Boom.  Amen.

Yes, all recent.  Running XP and using McAfee.  Computer was running wicked slow for weeks, then just gave up the ghost.  I'll try as you suggested, then post results.

Batman111,

If this was recent, then try reading...

Software Updates Causes Wireless Connectivity Issue Or Unable to Connect to Internet

If not, Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

Also what virus program and firewall are you using?

Just tried a NetGear router... was able to login with two other computers but not the DELL E310.  Why isn't the ethernet connection working?  Is there a hardware install or a setting that wasn't properly completed by the Dell setup routine?

shut down all firewalls including windows firewall.  In "LAN or High-Speed Internet" window (from Ctrl Panel - Network Connections) I have 1394 Connected, for it seems the past 90 minutes at 400 Mbps, but still nothing in iExplorer Browser.  ipConfig via C:\Windows\System32\ipconfig/all simply replies "Windows IP Congiguration"  nothing more.

Actually a partial suggestion.  If you run mcafee, they recently blew up everyones internet connection.  so macafee says to untinstall and then go off to your provider to reinstall.  In between the uninstall and reinstall you will have to reconfigure your modem.  dell knows about it in TS100342, but how to find TS100342??  There seems to be no pointer to take us to our macafee down load.  So maybe tomorrow there will be more information.

I reformatted the hard drive and have not reinstalled mcafee. The only thing installed now is windows xp and Internet explorer.

Batman111,

The easiest method is...

Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Start with the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

I followed DELL instructions - no joy.  The software is there.  In properties for the Ethernet connection, it shows connected at 400Mbps but no packets in or out.  I'm starting to think its a hardware issue.
