if you are connecting wireless to a linksys router, i believe you need a linksys usb adapter for that specific router.

No you really shouldn't have to have a linksys adapter. I never had to for mine...

check to make sure you are enabled to obtain a IP and DNS from the DHCP

open network settings

Right click on the wireless listing and select properties.

Scroll down in the windo box untill you see the TCIP listing and click on that then select properties.

On the window that opens up make sure obtain IP and DNS from the DHCP boxes are checked

DHCP is setup in the router. The router will assign a address to each device that requests one as long as all the handshake parameters are satisfied.

You might want to check your firewall and the security(WEP/WPA and passkey) on the system.

Also Try booting into "Safemode with network support" and see if it will connect that way.

You can also try temporarily disabling the wireless security and see if that works too

Also what are you using to operate the card the Dell software of windows.

Thank you for your reply.  I went to the properties and yes, it is set for the IP and DNS to be obtained automatically.  Although I do think the problem has to do with acquiring the IP address.  And something to do with the DHCP.  I just don't know enough about this to be able to wander through the computer and figure it out.  The signal from the linksys works fine.  Although marginal sometimes. Can you explain where the DHCP is and how that is configured? Thanks!

I have the firewall turned off.  And I reset the network and when I did, I had to re enter the WEP key.  Unless it is somewhere else.  And to disable the wireless security....how would I do that.  I will try and reboot in Safemode with network support.  And I'm sorry, I don't understand the last question....what am I using to operate the card, the Dell software of windows....oh maybe I get it now.  But I'm not sure I know how to find that out.  Again, thank you for your help.  I spent a minimum of 5 hrs yesterday to no avail.  Am ready to put it curbside for trash day.

okay, i stand corrected...quess you can use the dell adaper with the linksys router.that is what is great about this site, if you are wrong, you will learn the right answer usually here. great learning tool . though , if it was me, i would want both items to be from the same manufacturer, less chances of possbily problems,,,,just my 2 cents worth

also, check out this link , and go to IP assigned by dhcp server, and make sure you setting are like that....

http://www.home-network-help.com/set-ip.html

1) Go to Start and click on Control Panel.

2) Control Panel window will appear. Double click on Network Connections.

3) Network Connections window will appear. Right click correct Local Area Connection by identifying correct network card and click Properties.

4) Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click on Properties

The properties are set to obtain IP And DNS automatically.  It just can not connect to my network. The signal is strong. I have tried opening in safemode with network and nothing.  It will not connect.  I don't think it is able to acquire the IP address and I don't know what handles that piece of the puzzle.  This is one of those mega 5000 piece puzzles and I only have connected about 50.  So many more to figure out.  and try to keep the frustration at bay.

if you are using the linksys software to run the adapter when you click icon it will open either linksys software or the window wireless program. I have found that the linksys software does not work well on all systems. I have a linksys plug in adapter in my laptop that refuses to run on the linksys software but runs excellent on the windows wireless program.

here's a link with some info and screen shots.

I totaly agree with your statement about having all equipment from the same mfr. I think this holds more truer with the N stuff than the G.. I had been runnin a Linksys WRT54G router with my laptop with an intel card for over 3 yrs with no major issues. But when i got my new WRT600N dual band i got a Linksys matching card.

The wireless zero was set at automatic and started.  I refreshed but nothing.

Should I just kick it to the curbside.  Nothing seems to be working.  It seems like

something that should be easy but is not.  The IP address is just not transmitting or being

accepted, it seems.
