Cannot detect or install Internal NIC, Inspirom 1100

I have had my inspiron for a few years and have never used the internal network interface card. Today i got my new DSL package in the mail and have been pulling my hair out ever since. No matter hwat i do my computer will not read the NIC. I called dell and they gave me a link for an updated driver and that did nothing. I am in need of some severe guidance. This makes no sense. Please help.

Go to the device manager. See if your NIC is listed, and if a problem is reported.
Also go into network connections via the control panel. The card maybe be disabled. Right-click on the NIC and choose "Enable". What were you using to connect to the internet before you got DSL? Uninstall any software like AOL, NetZero, ect.

Thank you for your help. Just after i posted a little voice told me to check the bios (as should be the first step in these matters) and sure enough my LAN Controller had been disabled somehow, possibly by me. Anyways, i turned it on and i am up and running. thanks you for taking time to help.
