Cannot Stay Connected to Internet But Maintain Network Connection

We have a Dell Latitude 131L with a Dell 1390WLAN mini-card and XP Pro. We are also connected to a common network between four offices. We have developed an issue where the internet connection through IE7 is either dropped or initially unable to connect, however, we can access our network. The connection drops randomly, independant of time. Sometimes after 1-2 pages it drops the connection, sometimes 4-5, but usally 1-2 pages. I disabled the AVP and this made no difference. Usually the user has to log off and restart the pc. I have found that if we release and then renew the IP configurations, it begins to work, sometimes as long as 15 pages, but eventually it will drop the connection; still random and still happens.

Maybe unrelated, but we also noticed under the Device Manager a Base System Device missing a driver. We have tried to automatically search for and load a drive, but have been unsuccessful. The Device Instance Id is PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_01F61028&REV_01\4&B216F0A&0&09A4.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure which device that is, but if you did a clean install of the OS it probably means you missed a driver.  The full list for the Latitude 131L, in the order they should be installed, is:

  • Dell™ Notebook System Software
  • ATI™ Chipset Driver
  • AMD™ Processor Driver
  • ATI Radeon™ Xpress 1150 Driver
  • Ricoh® Media Card Reader Driver
  • Broadcom® 440X 100/100 Integrated Controller
  • Wireless Mini-Card driver (if applicable)
  • SigmaTel® STAC 9200 Audio Driver
  • MDC driver (model)
  • Synaptics® TouchPad™ Driver
  • QuickSet utility

My guess is you did not install the Notebook System Software, as that is basically a part of the required chipset (motherboard) driver.

I'm not sure what is causing the problems with your network connection, however.  Does each of the four portions of your network uses the same IP address block?  Are there duplicate IP addresses?  This is just a guess, but if they all go out through one internet connection, and two system share an IP address, it could be that traffic for the problem system is getting directed to the other (i'd guess because it was closer to the gateway from a physical network connection standpoint).
