Can't connect to internet using Broadcom cable

Question

My daughter is having problems connecting to the internet using eithernet.  She connects ok using wireless, but unfortunately her dorm is not wireless capable.  I was told by our internet provider her eithernet slot, probably failed, and it couldn't be replaced because is was integrated into the motherboard.  Warrantee is off.  His suggestion was to buy a network card and hook internet that way when she needed to use ethernet.    Ok I'm a real novice here so, please forgive my lack of knowlege with this--we bought a network card for the pc slot, the one they recommended at the store--unforunately it doesn't fit/connect into her pc card slot--do they make different sizes on the pins configuration?  I think this is a 10/100 if that sound right.   We did talk briefly to a technician about it at Dell--she had us check the config (I think) and it looked as if it was recognizing the broadcom, but still says cable unhooked with tried to attach and install eithernet.    If anyone has any help or what our next step should be, we would surely appreciate it!! Cable not connected is the error message, no yellow or red splats when checked the devices list that technician walked us to.

Thanks for the reply:   When you connect the ethernet cable to the system, what is the cable connected to on the other end, and do you notice the tiny little LED's on the network jack on the computer lighting up? Also, try connecting it with the computer plugged in to the A/C adaptor instead of on battery power if you had not already   Daughter is at school with computer, making this even harder--but she is going to try this.  Yesterday, we checked for the little lights--we could not find any little squares of light.  But when I looked where the cable was connected, I could see a green light shinning through the clear part of the plug---does that make sense?    But now other lights.   We were plugged in AC and directly to the cable plug in that the internet supplier installed.

Laptop is at home for the weekend, so I can work on it much easier.  When we plug the cable in we see no lights.
