Can't connect to internet via office network

Hello and thanks in advance for any help.

My new Inspiron has an ethernet card that "just works" on my home network. Plug it in and I can get online.

I haven't been able to get online at the office. I'm getting an IP address and I can ping other computers on the network. But they can't ping the laptop.

I've tried all the obvious physical stuff like swapping the ethernet cable, trying different ports, etc. I tried renewing the IP address. I tried updating the driver. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the card in Device Manager. Nada. Incidentally, other employees have no trouble with their laptops.

Here's what ipconfig has to say:

Firstly, your ip address needs to be on the same subnet as your office pc's.

If you are obtaining an IP address from the office server, then check to see if the office server is providing you with the correct IP and subnet.

Example: if your ip address and subnet is

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

then each office pc should have the same subnet mask and their ip's might look something like:

192.168.1.99

192.168.1.98 etc

If you run a peer-to-peer, try pinging your loopback address to see if IP client has been correctly installed on your laptop.  type: ping 127.0.0.1

If this doesnt work, go into the network properties and reconfigure tcp-ip.  Most networks require users to select "obtain IP automatically" and "obtain DNS auto.."

do this:

start-control panel- network & internet connections - network connections - right click on your lan icon - select ....properties, double click on tcpip...etc

Thanks, CP.

The subnet mask is the same as the other computers on the network.

IP address is in the right range - our router assigns addresses starting with ...100.

I can successfully ping 127.0.0.1

It is already set to obtain IP and DNS automatically.

Still no go.

You mentioned that you've pinged your laptop from other office computers....have you tried pinging your computer name as well as you ip address.  A problem with domain name service can produce problems in ip address to name resolution.  From an office pc, ping your pc name.

By the way is your network a peer-to-peer or does it have a server?

Q's to probably ask yourself:

Do you office computer's or server have a firewall or some time of third party software that provides network protection that only allows communication with specific ip addresses or workgroup names?

Can you ping an internet name like: ping www.google.com

What operating system are you using....what are your office workers using?

Maybe try bringing in you home pc into the office to see if that connects ok.

If your using Windows XP for instance, can you see any workgroup pc's in the "view network computers" screen? Have you gone through the network wizard steps.

Can you ping the default gateway address?  If you can then you know you have a connection to the router.

Cheers,

Caleb.

OK, just tried that - no success.

> Can you ping the default gateway address?

Yes.

> Can you ping an internet name like: ping www.google.com?

No.

It's peer-to-peer. My laptop is running Windows XP. All the office computers are Macs running OS X but a couple of my coworkers bring in their own XP laptops, which aren't having any problems connecting.

I've run the network setup wizard a few times. I've disabled the firewall software.

OK, I got it working. There was something wrong with the IP address it was being assigned. I forced a different address and now I'm up and running.

Thanks for the help!
