cant connect to wireless network for some reason... driver problem?

I cant connect to my linksys wireless-G router for some reason.
When I had vista on my inspiron i connected no prob.

Then i removed vista and installed xp.

My  wireless network shows up in available networks, but when i click connect it says "unable to connect"

I tried connecting to an unsecured network and it connects no prob (weakly though).

The ethernet connections works fine, but i just cant make a connection to my router...?

I am thinking it has something to do with an incorrect driver because i dont have xp drivers so i've been downloading them from dell support.

so my question: --if this is a driver issue, which ones would cause computer to not connect like this?  the driver its using at moment is the dell wireless 1390 wlan mini-card driver.

or what else could this prob be?

thanks for any ideas!

--also, last driver i installed was chipset drivers --i heard that makes a difference??

Here is the Windows XP driver for the 1390 MiniCard..

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R140747&SystemID=INS_PNT_E1405&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=9805&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=6&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=187881

Even though the heading says for 'Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN mini Card' it IS still for the 1390 MiniCard (as says in description)..

Description: Download this driver if you reside in the US. This release supports the Dell Wireless 1350, 1370, 1450,1390, 1490, and 1500 series Mini Card, MiniPCI and PC Card devices (not USB).

If that doesn't solve it, post back.

Thanks alot for the driver info.
But i think its something to do with the linksys wireless-g router.
I did update driver but i think it was same one that was on there.
I reset the router and the problem dissapeared, but now an even more annoying problem has surfaced.
The connection works great as an unsecured network, but whenever I try to add some security to it (password or encryption, or even simply naming the newtork) the connection fails. Sometimes it will reconnect, but it then disconnects etc etc..

This is what I'm doing specifically:
1st I turn on linksys.
Then I enter the routers default ip address in my browser window in order to get access to linksys web set-up. (connection is fine at this point)
Then I try to name the network and.....connection fails. I did get lucky once after naming it (stayed connected)  but then it disconnected when i tried to enter a password.
It has done this about 5 times in a row.

So, it will stay perpetually connected as long as i dont mind an unsecured network, but as soon as i try to add some security it disconnects.
This is a weird problem isnt it?
(Also router worked great before i did my xp install)

thanks for any more ideas!

Hm, well now it's time to do a little router firmware update. I understand it worked before when you had Vista not XP (usually it's the other way around) but a firmware update could never hurt it, if anything only help it..

I'm gonna need the model and version of your Linksys Wireless-G Router.

having a few problems myself with wireless conections. inspiron 1501, new, (a week old) & ready to throw it through the window. i have got a netgear DG834Gv3 router with another laptop connected through a usb adaptor, this works perfect,my new one however is a different story, can only connect to the net via the ethernet cable, as soon as i disconnect the cable it cuts me out from the net, had dell on my computer for an hour & they said it was the router at fault, neatgear said it was the computer at fault, my internet sevice provider said it wasn't their fault, everyone of them has told me to got on internet explorer, type in 192.  etc. but none of them has a solution, can anyone help me?

Well I managed to get my wireless router working , but its linksys.
I finally got it working by resetting it.
If I were you i would try resetting it then set it up to work with your new dell first.

However:
I think what you have to do is, like alot of people on this forum say, is specifiy EXACTLY what steps you are taking to try and make it work.
Thats the only way people on this forum can help you out.
If you do that then someone with more experience will invariably pinpoint your problem for you.
Good Luck!
