Did you install the chipset drivers?

Did you check device manager to see if any devices are not working correctly?

device manager

The Device Manager is a Control Panel applet included with Microsoft Windows operating systems that allows the user to display and control the hardware attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted where the user can deal with it. The list of hardware can be sorted by various criteria.

For each device in the list, users can:

  • Supply device drivers to the hardware
  • Enable or disable devices
  • Tell Windows to ignore malfunctioning devices
  • View other technical properties

Device Manager was introduced with Windows 95 and later added to Windows 2000. In NT-based versions, it is included as an MMC snap-in.

I'm in this same boat.  I have a 4 year old Dimension on which I just did a complete reload of XP and Dell software (giving the computer to my mother).   In device manager, right under Network Adapters, I have a "other devices", with "Ethernet Controller".  This one has a yellow question mark with an exclamation mark on it.  The 1394 Network connection tests fine, but I cant connect.
For some reason, this reload has not gone very well for me.

If your NIC under Adapters has a yellow question mark,
it might be that your NIC driver was not installed properly.

You might want to repair it or try re installing the driver instead. :-)

Well, I managed to figure it out finally.
I downloaded the Intel Pro 100 M  Desktop Adaptor off the Resource CD, even though it told me I didnt have any hardware compatible with it.  I then went into device manager, right clicked on the Ethernet Adapter that had the question mark, clicked update drive and followed the manual update process (have my own disc, went to the C drive and found the dell drivers folder)....
It was a trying process....
Now to find that audio driver...........

Hello,

I had a similare problem but cannot connect to my ISP.  I get the icon that shows I'm connected to the server but that's as far as I get.  I can't get to any web sites or email.  I've removed all firewalls and anti virus and still nothing.  My card is fine.  I've contatced my ISP dozens of times but I seem to know more than they do.

Any suggestions?

Alright, so you were saying that your card is working fine, you checked it in your device manager already? What connection are you trying to use? wired or wireless?
What did your ISP tell you?

Please provide me those informations. :smileyhappy:

I tested it in Device Mgr.  I also removed it and put a new one in and it diod not work.  I put the old card back in and it works.  Cable provider came over and got it working on his laptop.  Earthlink just passed me to me cable provider.  Cannot ping any server/site.  ipconfig shows an IP address but still does not let me truly connect.

I have removed all firewalls.  It started when I upgraded my Zone Alarm firewall.  Even after removing it it still won't connect.

Thanks

This sounds like a good time to use system restore. I would try restoring to a date before you installed Zone Alarm?

Tried that.  It wouldn't let me do any type of restore.  I may have a Windows issue.  I didn't have the admin code so I couldn't re-install Windows.  I ordered to new PC to fix it, but I'd like to resolve this
