can't find modem after replacing harddrive
Hi, 1st time on board and 1st time trying to fix computer. I have an XPS 1550 laptop. I just replaced the harddrive as per dell specs. I have reinstalled the OS(vista), followed the suggested order for the drivers but when I went to install the communication drivers I got a message that no modem can be found. Looking in my device manager, there is indeed no modem listed. Where would I find/how can I get a modem??

gmx999,
When you installed the operating system, did you install the desktop/notebook system software and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

gmx999,
If you installed the desktop/notebook utility and the chipset drivers, then you should be able to install the modem.
Go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag number and look for the modem you have installed. They're usually under communications and wireless adapters are listed under network.

Thanks Rick. The modem listed is the same as the one on my drivers/utilities disk. I have downloaded the modem application and utility onto a memory stick and downloaded to computer but still says modem device not found. Is it possible that something could be wrong with the modem?

Gordon,
Try running Finding System Information. At the bottom, it will show your network adapters. Look there and see what's listed. If you remove the product ID, post the rest of the information back here.

gmx999,
You said...
The Loading Network Card Information error comes from running systeminfo on an xp machine.
Can you be specific on the network adapter you have insatlled.

I am not sure what you mean? Network adapter. Is it the : Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card
or the Marvell 88E80XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller??

gmx999,
When you go to download the drivers, does the page show up with a model? It should look something like...
Drivers & Downloads for XPS L501X

I reinstalled and ran system info again. I found the 3 network cards. Wireless 1505 Draft, Bluetooth device, Ethernet controller. All show media disconnected.

gmx999,
Download using Internet Explorer, in your browser, the following...
These must be installed in order.
Dell Notebook System Software the Intel Mobile Chipset and the Ricoh R5C833
Then download and install (Hoping you have Vista 32-bit system)
Marvell 88E80XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller
Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card
Dell QuickSet
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR)
What happens? Any yellow exclaimination marks or red x's in device manager?

It looks like the poster is confused about network cards and telephone modems. He probably doesn't have a dial up modem in his computer. IMO Broadband connections should never have been called modems! He doesn't need to install any Communications drivers. Those are for telephone modems and can be skipped.
