Can't get IP address with cable modem connected

Hi, I'm trying to get my brand new Dimesion 3000 XP SP2 system up and running. I've failed at the second hurdle...

When I connect my cable modem (Terayon) I get a warning and error in the Event Viewer which result in no IP address being assigned. The first is E100B "did not receive auto-negotiation advertisement from link partner", the second is Dhcp "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP server) ..."

The DHCP service is running fine.

The modem was (is) successfully running with my old Dell system (where I'm writing from). Before connecting to the new system I turned off the modem for 30 minutes, connected it to the new PC, waited some more minutes, still no IP address. I have tried renewing the IP address, running the utilities which have been suggested in another thread describing a very similar problem to mine but no luck. I shut down the firewall, the virus SW, rebooted, pulled all my hair out - still nothing.

I tried calling Dell support several times today in Switzerland, couldn't reach anyone (OK, I wasn't prepared to wait for more than 10 minutes on their premium cost number).

Any other ideas?

Thanks, Astro

Astroswiss,

What IP address is assigned to your NIC?  Click Start->Run and type in "CMD".  Click .  Type in "IPCONFIG /ALL" in the command window and press .  Do you have a "Physical Address" similar to 00-23-A4-34-AF-F3 ?  What is the "IP Address"?  Is it a 169.254.xxx.xxx  address?

Steve,

All is working now! Al I did was go to bed, wake up, connect the cable from the old PC to the new one and then I switched on the new PC. The IP address was assigned and life is wonderful.

I think the issue was that the modem was not connected long enough to a switched-off-PC (the modem is always on). Yesterday I waited around 30 minutes, but I guess that wasn't long enough.

Thanks and regards, Astro
