cant talk to pc from laptop using router
I have a draytekV2600G wireless router and draytek laptop wireless adaptor inserted into my laptop and I have a separate PC wired into the back of my router, with printer, dial up internet connected to the PC.
IP address of the pc is: 192.168.1.10
IP address of the laptop is:192.168.1.11
I can ping the router from both machines, ie 192.168.1.1
I can ping the laptop from the PC
But I get a “time out” error when I try to ping the pc from the laptop, which is the must important thing as my printer/modem is setup on pc
I’ve think I’ve tried everything at this stage , please please help me , this is driving me (a my wife!) crazy!
Both machines are running windows xp sp2 (laptop has a Ethernet card also)
Both machines have file/printer sharing on and exceptions are enabled in firewall
I’ve run network wizards on both machines (PC is the host and laptop the client)
I’ve read every part of the knowledge base in windows and dell
Any suggestions?????

Do you have any third party firewalls installed on the PC (like Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, McAfee Security Center, Sygate Personal Firewall, etc.)? If so, try disabling such firewalls temporarily, then figure out how to configure them to allow local network traffic.

tried turning off firewall on both machines and still no connection from notebook to pc.
the pc is new and has mcafee installed and the notebook is 1 year old and has Norton installed
i hardwired with CAT5 cable to see if it was the wireless adaptor ,still didn't work.
must try direct cable from machine to machine later, but i would say that wont work either
i upgraded the notebook from XP sp1 to sp2 that didn't work
would you suggest clean install of xp sp2 on the notebook instead of just an upgrade?

These firewalls are problematical. Some users have reported that simply disabling the firewalls doesn't help. They either have to configure them properly or uninstall them completely until they get the network to work.

Got it working! mcafee has its own firewall built in on top of windows firewall,
i enabled local area network box under utilities which is off as default
and added the ip address of the laptop into preferred ip addresses
all i need to do now is setup internet sharing on the laptop to pick up the dial up
modem on the pc.
any suggestions?

Which version of Windows is running on the laptop? If the router is assigning IP address, you need to make sure that Windows' Internet Connection Sharing does not assign IP addresses.

You should probably put the router in Access Point Mode (rather than router mode) so that it doesn't assign IP addresses, and doesn't try to connect to the Internet. Then enable Internet Connection on the Dialup adapter, and either manually assign IP addresses to all computers or try letting Internet Connection Sharing assign IP addresses. Having never used dialup with a router, I can't provide more details.
