Change SSID and WEP Key after AP modification

You setup the SSID and the WEP security in the router. Access the router, type 192.168.1.1 on your Browser. Navigate to the wireless setup page. First thing is to enter your new SSID with no security. once you save that you will need to reset the profiles on your wireless clients to the same SSID.  I assume your using the Linksys as your SSID on them. Once you have the router and the clients on the same SSID you can set the security on the router end first. Let me recommend that you chose at least WPA over WEP if all your wireless clients will allow for WPA. .Enter your passphrase into the security section. I remmond that you you then copy that key and past it into a blank notepad file and then save that file onto the desktop.

then when its time to enable the security on your clients then just copy and past the key in. This generally eliminates the possibility of misstyping the key.

Will VISTA allow me modify SSID with the current network labeled home or should I delete that one and start over?

I did choose WPA.

the name that Vista uses to call your network is different from you SSID. This can be changed but I am not at a vista machine at the moment.

If no one else responds I will post the way later this afternoon when i get home.

Open the Network and Sharing center.

click on the customize link 

in the box that pops you can assign a name to the network. 

Now if you are refering to the workgoup name you need to right click on the my computer icon and select properties. On the System box select the advanced system settings. Click on the computer tab.

IF you do change the workgroup name you will have to change it on all your clients or they will not see each other
