Communcations port busy

Question

Sis has an older Dimension 4300S.  When she tries to connect to the internet, she gets a message saying 'the communications port is busy'.  Any ideas??   Thanks! Eli

EFERNANDEZ, 'COM Port Busy' points to a software program monitoring your modem's activity.  This could be something as simple as fax software.  Try starting the computer in Safe Mode.  Does the problem still occur? Steve

Open up the tower and put the modem in a different PCI slot (not the first one), restart the computer. If the problem persists, replace the modem.
