Computer doesn't recognize modem- can't fax
Hi,
Recently I had my Dell Dimension 4100 upgraded (wonderful system, going strong for almost 5 years now) from Windows 98SE to Window 2000. Since the upgrade I haven't been able to use the fax. My system was installed with MODEM, V.90, INTERNAL, DATA FAX VOICE MODEMS. When I go to the control panel and check the modem it says DELL 33.6 DATA 14.4 FAX MODEM. When I verify the modem it says MODEM FAILED TO RESPOND.
When I check for the modem in the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS the modem listed there is CONEXANT PCI MODEM. I am confused. The fax worked fine BEFORE the upgrade, so I am wondering do I need to upgrade the phone tools that came with the pc? If not, how can I get the system to recognize the modem that is on the pc now.
The phone tools that came with the system is BVRP PHONE TOOLS 2.1 VERSION - AZTECH MDP3900V MODEM. Before I upgrade the phone tools I want to make sure that the modem will work afterwards.
I hope this makes sense to someone, because I really need some help. I do plan on contacting the company that did the upgrade on Monday to find out what happened to the modem.

The driver that you want is the MDP3900V-U. To get to Safe Mode, restart your computer, and when the Dell logo appears, start tapping the key. A menu will appear and you can choose to start in Safe Mode. The screen will say Safe Mode in all 4 corners. You can access Device Manager in Safe Mode the same way you do in Normal Mode.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.
I did go to the link you provided and it gives me two choices under MDP 3900 - 56K Internal PCI V90/K56flex based Driver, and they are MDP 3900V-U and MDP 3900V-W. Which should I chose? Also when I check for the Unimodem in the Device Manager under Sound, Video and Game Controllers, it's not listed there. Will this only appear in Safe Mode? And can you tell me how to access Safe Mode. I've never had to use it before.

I have a similar problem with my Dell Demention2400 in that it doesn't seem to understand the modem. This PC came with the modem inbuilt with Windows XP installed. One day the fax didn't work but no way to tell how long it had been like that since we rarely use FAX, or the modem.
How did you figure out where & what file name to get for the drivers? The original info from Dell indicated that this was a "56K PCI Telephony Modem" Product code = 56KWS SKU = [313-1314] Part Number = 8T243 and was purchase around the end of January, 2004.
If I go to control panel and click "Phone and Modem options" I get a message of "Phone and Modem control panel can not be opened. You may have a problem starting telephony service."
The has been a lot of add, delete, reinstall going on, to no avail. The modem shows up in the device list as: "Conexant SmartHSFv.9x 56k Speakerphone PCI Modem" each time it is deleted and scanned for new devices, but I'm not sure that thisi is correct since a lot of fingers have been in here lately.
If you highlight the modem, properties, and go to diagnostics tab, and query:
AT+GMM +GMM: sSmartHSFiV.9x RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem
