Have you tried logging on to your router's configuation utility and seeing if it is gettng a valid IP address from the modem? Without know the make and model of router, I can't provide details on how to do this, but you should be able to read the router's User Manual to figure it out.
I have a Netgear 814v2. I did log onto router and think there is some conflict with the addresses but not sure what and what to change it to. On the router, the internet port says:192.168.0.3, DHCP client, IP subnet mask:255.255.255.0, Domain Name Servers 66.82.4.8. , firmware: 501.01 May 9, 2003
On the laptop (that works) configeration it says: Ip address: 192.168.0.2, DHCP enabled, same subnet as above, default gateway 192.168.0.1, DHCP server 192.168.0.1, DNS 66.82.4.8
On desktop (that doesn't work) IP address: 192.168.0.3, same subnet, default gateway 192.168.0.1, same DHCP server and same DNS server as other computer.
Both computers are Windows XP
Once all this happened, I couldn't get into the satelite system control center as I could before the update of the satelite modem. I use to put in 192.168.0.1 into browser and got the satelite control center, now I get the router. I was also wondering if I need to update firmware. I have actually gone on Hughesnet support that only told me to check router. I then spent several days with Netgear support that told me they would have to refer the case to supervisors and then I never heard another word. I have tried rebooting everything in the right order with waiting for each one to come back on fully before turning the next one on.
That still doesn't answer the question as to whether or not the router is getting an IP address from the modem. Opne the router's configuration utility, go the Maintenance heading and click on Router Status. What is the IP address of the internet port reported there?
You can't get to the satellite control utility because you are connecting through the router which seems to have the same local IP address as the modem. This is a different issue, and you will probably have to connect directly to the satellite modem rather than through the router to get to the modem's control utility. Let's stay away from that for now.
I did that. It is listed in my last post: the internet Ip address is 192.168.0.3.
You are probably right about getting the control utility directly through the satelite modem but before I updated, I could get it wirelessly through the router. Thanks for helping. Dana
