connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found
Problem: getting Callie’s computer on a new wireless network. (Callie is my eight-year old daughter).
Her computer consistently states that she is connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found.
Hardware:
Dell Dimension 4700 (XP, SP2) – main computer, hard wired to the:
Dell router, wireless 2350 Broadband router
We have RoadRunner cable internet connection
Callie has a Dell Dimension 4400 (XP)
My wife, Janet has a Dell Inspiron notebook (ME)
Dell told us to buy Linksys cards which I did
For Callie’s Dell 4400 – Linksys Wireless G USB adapter, WUSB54GS
For Janet’s Inspiron – Linksys Wireless B USB network adapter
When we ordered the Dimension 4700 last month and the Dell router we paid an extra USD 180 for Dell to send a technician out to network Janet’s notebook and Callie’s computer to the internet and for printer sharing.
It took almost one month to get Dell’s technician to appear. He was from a company called BancTec. On 10 January 2005, he hooked up the router to the new 4700 with no problems. He hooked up Janet’s notebook with no problems and those two are fine to this day.
However, he could not get a connection with Callie’s 4400. He spent all afternoon and finally packed it in. His position was that there was something wrong with Internet Explorer. He left knowing full well that the job wasn’t completed. He simply told me to call Dell and get it straightened out. Sadly, but not surprisingly, BancTec has never called back to see if the problem was solved.
There seems to be no question that Callie is connected. We can ping Yahoo, Google, and our router – four packets sent, four packets received, zero lost.
When I click on the Linksys green icon, it pops up and states, “You are connected to the access point but the internet cannot be found.”
I have spent countless hours on the phone with Dell. We have run the XP reinstallation disk three times, the last was the full-blown reinstallation. Still, nothing has changed.
Help, please.

Sorry for the double post. Apparently one should not hit the tab button when composing a message. (Where is the little red-faced emoticon when I need it?)

On Callie's computer, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens up, type ipconfig /all then hit the Enter key. Copy and paste the output of the ipconfig command in notepad and save as a text file. Copy the text file to a floppy or CD-R and take it to a computer that has internet access, log into this forum, open a reply to this message, then copy the text of the file into the reply. We'll start from there and hopefully be able to see what the problem is.
By the way, is there security enabled on the router? If so, you might want to disable the security features, such hiding SSID, MAC Address filtering, and any encrpytion, until you get this problem solved.
