Connecting to another system using a Network Hub.

I am having a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop and a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.

I tried to set up a home network using a network hub.
I set the workgroup as "HomeWG" and Ip addresses as 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 (as I did not have a domain server)

When i rebooted, i could find the workgroup but not the individual systems. I tried after removing the firewall but the problem persists.

I tried to connect my dell to my PC but again the same problem while I could connect my Toshiba laptop to the network with the PC.

Am I missing something here? Could you please provide detailed steps to connect my Dell laptop to the network.

It has been reported here that with XP SP2 you can tell the firewall to allow local traffic.  Also try in Windows Explorer to search for a computer and put the IP address of the other notebook in and see if it is found.

Thank you. I am having SP2. I checked the firewall settings. But it looked fine.

I tried to connect the laptops using wireless network.

Then I found that Norton Firewall was active. After disabling it I could see both the laptops in each. But when I tried to open the other laptop (Toshiba) from my dell. I am getting the error that I don't have permissions.

The Toshiba has XP Prof. with SP2. I could not find the Firewall settings in the control panel.

How can we make change to Firewall in XP Prof SP2?

Also, is it necessary to have same Workgroup to setup a wireless network?

Hi Jim!

Say, if my laptop is configured to my home workgroup "MyHomeGrp". And I go to a different city where the network workgroup name is some "LocWorkGrp".

Does that mean that I need to change my workgroup whenever we want to connect to a different wireless network.

SashiKanth,

You may find this Microsoft article on the SP2 Windows Firewall helpful, especially this section about allowing exceptions, such as file and printer sharing.

You'll have problems regardless of whether the machines are wired or wireless unless the "workgroup" name is the same for all machines on your network. The links listed in my signature below about XP Networking help may assist you.

SashiKanth,

There are actually two issues here - browsing and access. A "workgroup" is a name that's used to facilitate network browsing. But it's possible to access resources (other machines and printers) that aren't in the same "workgroup" using one of the several techniques described in this article.

You might also want to read this recent thread about accessing machines in other workgroups.

If you regularly move the laptop between two workgroups, investing in a copy of NetSwitcher might be a good idea.
