Connecting to public wirelesss networks

I see previous messages regarding this issue but please help me understand and correct the problem.  Firstly, I had an Averatec laptop which was able to jump onto any public, unsecured wireless network.

My new Dell E1505 with a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-card can "see" the network, and says I'm connected and yet I can do nothing with it.  No homepage comes up, can't access any online programs like Napster, etc...

What do I need to do to fix this?  And why is this happening?

Thanks for your help.

Good feedback but I have the same problem.  I don't have Norton or McAfee - I have Micro PC-cillin.  Also, could you be more specific in telling HOW to make the adjustments mentioned?

Any other suggestions?

Threads get awfully confusing when you jump in with a "me to".  The polite thing to do is start a new thread.

My bad.  I don't usually repeat threads for exact same issue - including same laptop and wireless card.  But I will oblige if that makes it easier to answer....
