Connecting to the internet

I just recieved my XPS M140 notebook today.  I have been messing with it for hours.  I can not seem to get a internet connection.  Only the charger and adapter came with my package.  I believe everything else is built into my notebook.  I don't know what I am missing for connection.  I connected the ethernet from the modem.  I want to try wireless connection but I do not know what is necessary for me to purchase.  I can't get any help from Dell because they have been closed for hours, or under construction.  I would really hate to have to wait till the morning.

What kind of internet service do you have (cable/dsl/dialup).  Note that if you are changing the device connected to a cabale modem, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem. If you want to connect to the modem by wireless, then you will need a wireless router that connects to the modem.

Well, I've been on the phone with Dell for 3 1/2 hours now and my cell phone finally gave out!  I would charge it if my dog had not chewed my charger 2 weeks ago.  We accomplished getting my cable modem connection working.  We were right in the middle of reconfiguring my pc when we were disconnected due to my uncharged cell.  So now they sent me an email supposedly showing me the rest of the steps.  I'll try that and see how it works out.  So I do have a cable connection, now I am just trying to set up my wireless router.  For some reason every time I try to istall it,  no connection is found and it does finalize the installation.  I have a really big headache, but I want to get this done!  Thank you so much for trying to help.  Your suggestion was right on the money.  Have a great night.
