connection

I have had my Inspriron B130 for several months.  I have been able to connect to wireless except for the past few weeks.  It keeps showing unable to connect to wireless network.  There have been no networks in range.   Make sure your wireless switch is on. Do I need something extra to get this started again.  I have a Dell wireless 1370wlan mini.
If I do a repair, I receive the message to contact person who manages your network.
I'm relatively new so please keep the answers simple.

Have you tried using the Fn F2 key combination which toggles the wireless radio on and off?

Yes I have used the Fn F2 key but still can't get on.  Do I need a router?  I never needed one before.

I find it hard to believe that there are no networks in range.  I told you I was new at this so any help from you would be appreciated.

If you don't have your own router and you are connecting to a neighbors wireless network, then be aware that this is illegal and is considered theft.  If you can't connect to a public wireless network, then this is a problem.  Have your tried unisntalling then reinstalling the drivers for your wireless network card.

The first thing I would do if I were you is to go to an area with a known public wireless hotspot and see if your wireless works there.  Once you know that your wireless card still works, then you will need a broadband (cable or dsl) internet connection in your home and a router to connect to the broadband modem.  Rotuers from Netgear, Linksys, and D-Link should work just fine.  You don't need the "High Speed" version of any of these routers, as they will not be able to connect to the internet at those speeds.  A wireless 802.11g 54 Mbps router should be sufficient if all you are doing is connecting to the internet.

I will stop and get a router.  Do you  have one that you would recommend. I have a Inspiron B130 with a 1370 wlan mini.  What do I need to do to uninstall and reinstall the wireless driver?  This is all new to me.
