Could this be a network card problem?
Hello
I have a BT Voyager 2100 wireless router. Connected to this I have 2 Dell PC’s in the wired connection & 2 other PC’s one a lappy both on wireless cards.
One of the Dell’s (this one) suffers from a disconnection problem. What happens is:- for no conclusive reason it will lose the ability to connect to the net even though the connection is showing as fine. Basically no data will flow. There is no time reason for this and it is not a constant thing. Sometimes this will happen 3-4 times a day, other times it will stay up for weeks. The only constant is that it only happens when the PC is unattended.
All the other PC's stay up fine.
The only way to resolve the problem is to do a re-boot on the PC. Nothing else will solve it.
Obviously I have tried the help line for the router, and they are stumped, and after much head scratching think it is the network card in the PC causing the trouble.
Anyone got any suggestion or come across this problem??
Cheers All
Nivek

Hi
Had already done that, but just checked again to make sure it had not reset.
The strange thing about the card is that it is showing as
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection #2. Could it be there is some conflict somwhere. There is no other card in the PC as far as I know.
Hmm!:smileywink:

Yep I have tried that also, but as soon as I re-booted it automatically re-installed its self again as #2 again. Did not need the cd.
Thanks Steve

Ping the suspect card @ 127.0.0.1 and see what results you get. If you get a time out message, more than likely the card is bad. At around $10 net, NIC problems aren't worth chasing these days, just replace it.
On the toher hand, if you get four good replys from the card, I would suspect a faulty driver issue, even though you don't see a hint in the device manager. Is this a re-install of some sort? If so, don't forget the chipset drivers!!!

This might not be a nic problem,
I'm experiencing the EXACT SAME ISSUE, I did all of the suggestions here as well as removing and making a new internet connection, and changing connection settings. I ALSO added a nic card from one that was in another pc that I know was working fine, created a new connection and still ended up in the same situation. Might this have something to do with "XP Service Pack 2 ???"
I'm in the same boat here, any new suggestions would be helpful.

Hi everyone.
I do not have SP2 installed on any PC.
Since my original posting a ne thing is happening. I can use outlook express even tough IE6 does not work, and I now have to re-boot twice in imediat sucession to get web access back.
BTW what does NIC mean?

Oh and I forgot to say I have pinged the card and get good results. I saw the instructions for this on another posting, and did the tests and got the recomended results.
:smileywink: more baffled by the hour

Ditto here, the card and router are aok and their s/w is up to date. I can ping my card, I can ping my router, I can even map a drive to another pc on the network... go figure, I just can't get online with the darn thing if I leave it alone for a little while. Now that I've been searching the forums for this and online, I'm starting to wonder if this isn't a small epidemic. I'd love to find the commonalities here and maybe narrow the cause down.
WIN XP SP2
Windows firewall disabled
Running up to date Zone Alarm Firewall
Networked along with two other Windows XP (not SP2), a Windows Millenium PC and an X-Box.
Connection to this pc is through D-Link DI-604 Router with latest (June or July 04 I think) software plugged directly into my Motorola Cable Modem, service through Cox Communications
Network Card is on board and has latest drivers
Other Network card (I threw in to see if it was a problem with the onboard connection) is a generic one that I had in another pc, same results with either onboard or this one, so I'd rule out the card issue.
XP SP2 OS is up to date, this is a new pc, not more than a month old.
I tried switching inputs on the router with the other pcs connected to it that had no connection issues, the other pcs performed fine using the plug I had the XP SP2 plugged into and the XP SP2 pc suffered from the same connection issues in any spot on the router it was plugged into.
I also replaced the RG-45 cable with new cable going to all my pc's just for peace of mind.
Nothing I have tried has worked thus far, I am pretty certain it's not a hardware issue at this point.

Hello Eveyone
I have now found if I change users once the conection drops it will re-start, but only for about 15 seconds, then IE6 drops right out. Does not even remember new address. However still with the same change of user (back to me) I am able to connect IE6 with a link for the e-mail telling me of new message. How strange is that.
Although this PC does not have SP2 on it, I did install it, but removed it again about a week later cos I thourght it may have been the cause. Hmmm very interesting.
Has anyone tried the fix in the previous link.
I am glad I statred this thread now

It looks to me like halweigh has a different problem than you do. This is one of the problems with someone jumping into a thread with a slightly different problem. The thread soon becomes very confusing. The link I posted is more likely to solve halweigh's problem than it is to solve your problem.
