D610 Rebuild - drivers in what order

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The following list is an overview of the correct order to install drivers on Dell desktops and portables. After reinstalling Microsoft® Windows®, follow the order listed when reinstalling drivers. It is recommended that you print this list for reference when installing drivers.

Note: Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order.
1.  Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A vital utility that provides critical updates and patches for the operating system. If you are reinstalling Windows or updating all drivers, it is important that this software be installed first. This is located under the System Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
2.  Chipset - Helps Windows control system board components and controllers. This is located under the Chipset Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
3.  Video Adapter - Enhances video performance. This is located under the Video Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
4.  Network Interface Card (NIC) - Enhances the network controller for Internet or network access. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
5.  Laptops Only: Dell Quickset or Dell Control Point Manager (DCP) - Controls power management, ambient light sensor, wireless profiles, and security features on laptops. This is located under the Applications on the Drivers and Downloads page.
6.  Audio Adapter - Enables and enhances the audio controller. This is located under the Audio Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
7.  Modem - Allows dial-up capability. This is located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
8.  Wireless Network Card - Enables and enhances the wireless network controller. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
9.  Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Keyboards - Enhances the pointing device features. This is located under the Input Device Drivers Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
10.  Other Devices Intel vProTM  or AMTTM  - Enhances system manageability. This is located under the Chipset Category on on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Bluetooth ®  Module located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Dell Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
PCMCIA/Smartcard controller located under the Security Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Touch Screen Digitizer Enables touch screen mouse control available on select Dell laptops. This is located under the Input Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
 

Thanks, but this is very much like what is listed in the 'Driver Installation Instructions' from my link above.

Take for instance 8.  Wireless Network Card - Enables and enhances the wireless network controller. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

When I go to the Network Category, there are 4 different drivers. How to I know (or find out) which one I need?

You have to know what hardware is installed in your computer. Send me a private message here in the forum with your system service tag number and I will take a look at what hardware is installed on your computer.

I have been able to get a wired connection to my router to access the internet. Can anyone please offer any help on what I need to download to get my wireless functioning again? I'll happily provide any information that I can.

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first(if applicable), then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

:emotion-55: Hint :emotion-55: When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software(if applicable)
Chipset or SMBus driver
Processor Driver (if applicable)
Video
Audio (sound)
Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
Modem
Network Card

First off, thanks for the reply. My problem (or more likely my stupidity) is which driver within the category.

e.g.within chipset there are three drivers to download - Broadcom, Intel, Texas. I presume that I only need one of these depending on my hardware? If so, is it relatively obvious from Device Manager what I have to know which driver to download?
 
Network has 9 different drivers, am I likely to need more than one and if so, how do I know which to install in what order?!

Hey Pudgy, thanks for the help. I have done this but there is no option on the menu for me to run this command. When I 'open' it I just got a DOS screen with:

C:>system info            1>c:>systeminfo.txt

I am normally quite IT literate but am really struggling here! Please explain where I am missing the point. I know from my Device Manager that I have a Broadcom NetXreme 57xx Gigabit Controller and have installed all drivers from the Network section for this, but no joy.

You copied the information wrong.

See if these drivers work. Broadcom BCM5784M LAN or better known as Broadcom Netlink Gigibit Ethernet (64-bit drivers)

Thanks I tried that but got a 'Windows Installer' message saying:

'This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor.'

I double-checked the 'systeminfo.cmd' info as well and have redone it with the same results.

Please let me any information at all as this is really frustrating! Thanks

I've installed that driver and no further joy. I've checked the BIOS and wireless is defaulted to be 'ON' during the XP load but still no Wifi light :emotion-9:

After you installed the operating system, you needed to install...

Dell Notebook System Software and Intel Mobile Chipset, Texas Instruments PCI 6515 Cardbus and the Broadcom Trusted Platform Module, FIRST or the rest of the drivers will fail to install.
