I remember that once when I had to attach the ethernet cable I had not turned off the wireless card, and wireless overrode the ethernet. I would have expected ethernet to win! Anyway, next time I turned off the wireless before attaching the ethernet cable.
The default connection is whatever it is set to be, and can be changed.
Start|Network Connections
Click the Advanced pull down menu (at the top of the window).
Select Advanced Settings from the menu.
Select the Adapters and Bindings tab.
The Connections box lists the connections in order of use.
Order the connections as you wish using the arrows at the right of the box.
