Delay in accessing Conexant D480 Modem

I have a Inspiron 600m delivered late Dec 2004. Running XP Pro.

PROBLEM:
It takes precisely 105 seconds (1.75 min) for any application software to access the modem. For example, this delay occurs if I use Hyperterminal to send AT&V to the modem, AT&T Worldnet dialer to dial my ISP, the device manager query function to probe the terminal, or modem diagnostics.

Once the 105s delay has elapsed with any particular application the modem operates normally with AT command responses and dialup connections.

The hardware part of the modem was replaced by Dell but did not help. I've done extended diagnostics that came up OK. I borrowed a PC card modem and it works fine (no delay). Driver is the latest (posted on web site in Aug04 although INF is dated Jan04). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the modem, including once in safe mode to no avail. I've tried generic drivers which do not work at all (as in blue-screen).

Any idea what might be causing this?

No specific idea but it really sounds like a software issue.  I would have suggested deleting all modem entries in Safe Mode, but you have done that.  Sorry I don't have more to contribute.  Oh, a thought - did you have (or still have) AOL on the notebook?  AOL uses its own dialer that overwrites Windows one.

I have never used AOL. I have deleted the AOL icons and other annoyances but have not gone further. Is there some other artifact of the AOL software I should get rid of?

If you uninstalled AOL, it is also said they overwrite Windows dialup routine with their own, which remains after uninstalling the AOL software.  Don't know more about that though.

Dear Crofty,

Don't waste anymore time with the Conexant 480 modem. I purchased an Inpiron XPS with the same modem two months ago and had nothing but problems with it (hanging on shutdown, long disconnection times etc.) when someone in these forums directed me to a thread in the general hardware Inspiron section. Seems that several other users were having similar problems with the same (defective) modem. I pointed this out the dell tech and was immediately sent me out the Broadcom equivilant modem. It said refurbished on the package but I installed it myself (a process which requires a little patience) and I have not had one problem since. If I can find the thread for you I'll write back.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Greg.
