Dell Dimension 4600 - No Local Area Connection

Question

Had to reboot my friend's Dell 6400, and when I tried to set up their Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem, there was no Local Area Connection to be found. Very odd... do I need to install anything specific from the 'Utilities and Drivers' CD they have to make this work?

Since there is no such thing as a Dimension 6400, I assume you mean an Inspiron 6400.  Is this correct?  I'm also assuming that what you mean by 'reboot' is that you reformatted and reinstalled Windows.  Is this correct?  If so, then you it is essential that after reinstalling Windows on this model that before you install any other device drivers, the chipset drivers must first be installed.  Without the chipset drivers Windows cannot recognize nor install drivers for many other devices.   After the chipset drivers are installed, the drivers for the ethernet network controller, video adapter, sound card, touch pad, and modem must be installed.  All of these drivers can be found on the Drivers and Utilities CD.  Updated drivers can be found on the Dell Technical Support web site.   Steve

It's a Desktop model Dell, a 6400 of some kind. Thanks for your help Steve, it is valued very much. Will go round and try it in a day or two. Thanks again, Nick
