Dell Dimension IEEE 1394 Ethernet Controller

Hi

There's a yellow question mark next to the above in the Device manager. Any idea where I can download a driver for it please. Plus what is its function?

Thanks

Tarantini,

The 1394 adapter is the Firewire adapter.  Although Windows considers it a networking device, it is typically used to connect a camcorder, digital camera or external hard drive.

Hover your mouse pointer over the Product Support link at the top of this screen and follow the "Drivers and Downloads" yellow brick road.

Hi Paladin

Thanks. I have done this already though and can't see the relevant driver download.

Tarantini,

The Service Tag number (which contains a zero, not an O) refers to a Dimension 4600.  An IEEE 1394 adapter is not standard equipment in the D4600, so I suspect the adapter is an add-in card.  Can you confirm this?  You will probably have to open the case and visually inspect the adapter card to determine its make and model.

That O could be a zero

Tarantini,

It looks like that system was purchased in Europe.  Here is a link to the Original System Configuration.  It does not seem to show an IEEE 1394 adapter.  If you can determine the make and model of the adapter you should be able to get a driver for it from the manufacturer's web site.

Unless it is some off the wall brand, XP should have found it during a reboot.

Hi

Silly question time but would the fact that the Eth. Controller driver is missing affect the installation of a broadband modem. I've installed all the necessary drivers for scanner, cameras etc no problem but when installing Tiscali broadband, when the find new hardware wizard appears it keeps flashing without installing the modem driver. It doesn't let you click 'next'. Its a new CD but I suppose it could be defective.

Thanks

Have you tried the Add/Remove Hardware applet?

Tarantini,

We may be caught up in symantics here.  An IEEE 1394 adapter is not an ethernet adapter.  The Dimension 4600 comes with an Intel 10/100 LOM network interface card (NIC) as standard equipment.  This is the interface that will connect to the broadband modem, unless your broadband modem is an adapter card you added to the PC.  Typically broadband modems are stand alone units that connect to the NIC in a PC using an ethernet cable.  Also, broadband modems do not require drivers.

If the driver you need is really for the Intel 10/100 LOM NIC, then all the drivers for the D4600 are here.  I also suggest you install the chipset driver first, then install the NIC driver.

Tarantini,

After investigating further it looks like Tiscali broadband uses a Sagem Fast 800 ADSL modem.  See this.  And the modem is a USB only modem.  Therefore it does have drivers and they need to be installed before you connect it to the computer.  And to answer your original question - No, the fact the the ethernet controller driving is missing will not have any affect on the installation of the Sagem modem.
